Editorial Algorithms        Using Social Media to Discover and Report Local News

Abstract   The role of algorithms in the detection, curation and broadcast of news is becoming increasingly prevalent. This talk describes what happens in a future where all local news is sourced by machines. To better understand this practice we developed CityBeat (thecitybeat.org) a live example for a system that implements what we call ''editorial algorithms" to find possible news events based on geo-tagged social media and make an editorial decision whether they are of interest. The results of this project shed light on the inherent biases that are built into our platform and live feeds of social media data
